Walters-Steiner Suburban Homestead
There are two houses on our 1/5 acre. My husband and I and our two daughters own the small cottage in the back and my parents own the front house. We all bought the property together, with the intention of growing lots and lots of food and having our own mini homestead. The houses are separate, but the gardening is communal. There are several separate areas, but the area where we grow the most food is a small, very sunny patch between the two houses in which we have built 3 raised beds. There are also raised beds bordering the backyard of our house, with mostly shady area but some sun. There are blackberry bushes up against the front fence, and potted plants (some edible) scattered all over the property. We have expanded this year and are hoping to increase our food production. I am constantly inspired by the DerVaes family in Pasadena and aspire to reach this level of homesteading some day. Our 3-year-old daughter loves being out in the garden and eating veggies right off the plants.
