SunRidge Garden

Located on Watertrough Road in Sebastapol, we are a Waldorf informed public charter school whose garden weaves its way along the pathways, around the classrooms and play fields and extends to a field where garden classes are held.  The gardens are a mix of edibles and native perennials with some exotics and annual flowers. Most of the gardens are maintained by parent volunteers and faculty.

Two Kindergarten classes maintain their garden which is in their play area.  The garden is primarily edibles and is maintained by everyone in the Kindergarten community.  Garden classes are held once a week in the Kindergarten area.

K-4 have garden classes once a week.  Their work and garden design is integrated with the curricula.  Studends in first grade spend much of their time interacting with the soil, water, bugs and compost.  They focus on the worms in their garden and all the critters.  They have planted a tea garden and enjoy making chard and kale salads. Second grade is currently focusing on creating habitats.  Their teacher had them build a bird house for the California Blue Bird.  In garden class they created a habitat for decomposers in a terranium.  Third grade have planted the bulk of our crops including black corn as part of a seed saving effort with an organization called Schools for Chiapas.  Fourth grade had been studying local foods, animals, rhythms, watersheds and geography.  The focus for them is to see their garden and their school in the context of interconnected ecological circles.  We hope to extend this program to fifth grade where students can complete the cycle by maintaining school conservation efforts in order to share and respect the knowledge they have gathered.  These efforts include implementing and maintaining a recycling system, monitoring the worm bin, and participating in conservation, preservation and restoration projects on our school site and in our region.
