Inch by Inch...Row by Row
Currently:
On Saturday, May 15th we planted our new container garden. 3 tomato plants, 1 tomatillo, 3 peppers (yellow bell, poblano and some kind of 3 color mild pepper), lettuce, arugula, chard and kale, chives, two types of eggplant, lemon cukes, butternut squash and hubbard squash. Some new things, some favorite things (notice there is no zucchini!) and assorted herbs. We are planning on putting in a path around the containers with lemon thyme (?) as ground cover. It's raining today! Looking forward to a bountiful harvest come fall!
Before:
We had a small lawn in the backyard that was great when we had kids around but now that we're flying duo we decided to replace the lawn with planter boxes. Salvage redwood from an old shed in the "way back" and neighbor donations, we've spent about $4.00 on supplies. Flattened the mound where the lawn was and filled 2 - 4'x7' and 1 4'x4' box about half full. Our wonderful neighbor's gave us their leftover topsoil that filled the rest of the way.
We will be planting tomatoes, salad stuff (lettuce, chard, onions, radishes, carrots, etc.) as well as lemon cukes, japanese eggplant, salsa patch, butternut squash and assorted herbs. Not sure what else but we're going to experiment. Of course, we'll have patches of flowers here and there. We have had a garden every year but with these raised garden beds, we're anticipating a better harvest and not so many dropped veggies that never get picked.
