Garden Project at Wildwood Farm

Organic garden project and test garden.

The existing soil was enriched over 20 years ago with loads of composted sawdust and rice hulls.   Five years ago much of the area was further supplemented with horse manure trucked in and unloaded by hand.

The chef's garden project began four years ago expanding on a small plot primarily for family use.  Currently the garden includes a  border of permanent plantings producing edible berries such as Beautyberry, goji, goumi, thornless blackberry, and Sea berry.   Dwarf and semi dwarf pomegranate and dwaf figs are also growing.

Wendy Johnson dedicated the garden during an Earth Day Ceremony in 2009.   Wendy is a co-founder of Green Gulch Farm and author of Gardening at the Dragon's Gate.

Seasonal crops in the ground now include:  snap peas, fava beans, bush beans, assorted peppers, Japanese eggplant,  Rosa Bianca eggplant,  Heirloom tomatoes and basil.   We will plant melons and several unusual squashes soon.

A drip irrigation system is in place for most crops.   The other areas are hand watered.    No rainbirds are being used.
