Dunbar Elementary School

The Dunbar School Garden is situated on 1/3 of an acre on the SW corner of Dunbar's rural, oak-studded campus, and has been an integral part of the school's K-5 curriculums since 2001. The garden program provides approximately 250 kids with a hands-on, outdoor experience that encourages an understanding of, respect for, and love of the natural world.  Every child participates in weekly garden classes, about 45 minutes, with grade-appropriate curriculum that ties into CA state educational standards for science, math, language arts, and social science. The Dunbar Garden includes 12 raised classroom beds, butterfly & hummingbird habitats, an herb garden & strawberry patch, a fruit/nut orchard (20 trees), and an experimental straw bale bed that is used as a community planting area for all classes.  The most recent addition to the garden is 16 new raised beds (3'x11'), which will be used as a production garden for the school.  The produce grow in these beds will be used for more cooking lessons in the garden, and will hopefully supply the school's new salad bar with fresh veggies! Excitement for the garden program has grow so much that there are now over one dozen families caring for the garden over the summer, and enjoying the fruits of the students' labor. A new Dunbar tradition was started last year...  a Harvest Festival in October (to coincide with Fall harvesting) & a Spring Fling (to coincide with Spring planting). Fresh produce, flowers, crafts, seedlings, and homemade goods are 'sold' (donations are accepted) to raise money for the Dunbar School Garden program.  Several new ideas are in the works, including a native habitat trail, outdoor kitchen, recycled plastic bottle greenhouse, and expansion of our garden art installations.  Community participation is welcome in Dunbar's upcoming garden endeavors...  Please join us!!!
