Blossom Garden

We now have two raised beds and surrounding ground, we're considering adding another raised bed. In the summer, most of the area gets sun for at least 6 hours. Last year we put in a drip irrigation system. Right now in the raised beds we're growing bunch onions, garlic, leeks, romaine lettuce, butter lettuce, carrots, chard, beets, broccoli, pod peas, tatsoi, mustard greens, spinach, sweet peppers. Tomatoes, sorrel and potatoes are growing in the ground and we're using rice straw as mulch.

Our soil is silty with clay deeper down. We compost all our vegetable waste and amend the soil when the compost becomes available. A neighbor shared some horse manure with us recently and we're going to experiment with making compost tea from it.

Last year we also grew collards, Asian eggplant, tomatillos, butternut squash, zucchini, and runner beans. We grew two okra plants from seed. They have beautiful flowers, but it didn't get hot enough for the okra to yield much. The first year we had a sugar baby watermelon plant that gave us lots of little melons but only 3 got big enough to eat. It took a lot of water, so I doubt we'll repeat that experiment.
