A Successful Approach to Composting at Schools

Compost

In celebration of International Compost Awareness Week Sonoma Compost presents a series of compost events. These events are brought to you in collaboration with Daily Acts and are a jump start to the 350 Home and Garden Challenge 2011.
Attend this semi-informal gathering to view and talk about a successful approach for composting at schools or other business environment where food scraps are produced or consumed. You will see an example of a vermiculture system that handles the vegetative food scraps for an entire school. The talk will discuss how to analyze your waste stream, bin design, bin set up and maintenance, harvesting, and troubleshooting. It will also touch on the positive impact for the students, school curriculum for composting, and compost fundraisers. The Compost Club is a nonprofit organization that has diverted 32 tons of food scraps from the landfill to date. Ten schools participate in the program, and some sell their compost annually, generating nearly $1,000 in compost sales at each school site.
This event at the Wright Charter School will be presented by Rick Kaye, compost Specialist with Sonoma Compost and founder of the Compost Club.
